About the Book
Amanda Tapping’s Embracing Mental Health as a Fandom
“There's a different level of generosity to sci-fi fandom. We embrace diversity and inclusion. People connect from around the world, this global map of interconnecting lines. It’s that kind of connection where you keep an eye out for each other and if you see somebody struggling, you’d go up and help them, and it’s a beautiful thing.”
- Amanda Tapping, June 3, 2023 on The Companion

What is Embracing Mental Health as a Fandom?
Amanda Tapping and Stargate Co-Creator Brad Wright joined The Companion as partners and investors because community is everything.
For the past three years, The Companion has been on a mission to uplift fans in an increasingly lonely world, with the goal of creating 1 million life-changing memories for 1 million fans.
Together with this community, we’ve raised over $30,000 for mental health, hunger relief, and accessibility programs. This book is an extension of that mission—a way to continue sharing stories that matter.

The Questions That Shaped This Book
Throughout this journey, we’ve asked fans to share their personal experiences through a series of thought-provoking and heartfelt prompts. These questions guided the incredible stories featured in the book:
- How has fandom saved, changed, or affected your life?
- Describe yourself in ten words. What do they reveal about you?
- Write a letter of forgiveness—to someone else, or even to yourself.
- What are the "glimmers" in your life? Those small moments of joy or comfort?
- Which character has taught you the most about yourself?
- What is your comfort song, show, or movie?
- If you could say one last thing to someone you've lost, what would it be?
- Tell us about your unconventional path in life—how has it shaped who you are?
- What’s holding you back? What’s something you’re holding onto?
- Share a fandom story that made you laugh out loud!
- What is your biggest fear?
- How has fandom influenced your career or inspired your passions?
- Have you cared for a loved one? Share your experience.
- Have you bonded with family or friends over a show, movie, or game?
- What’s the most heartwarming act of kindness you’ve witnessed in fandom?
- If you’ve experienced miscarriage or infertility, write a letter to the child you lost or are waiting for.
- What reminds you that you're valuable, wonderful, and worthy?
- What would you tell your younger self—the weird kid, the sick kid, the kid who felt out of place?
These stories—your stories—are what make Embracing Mental Health as a Fandom so special. They remind us that no matter where we are, we are never truly alone.
